The Lord Nelson is a hub of the community and the function room is in use on most Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday the pub hosts singing academies and there are popular theme nights on Saturday evenings. Sunny Sundays are packed with Play Your Cards Right, a meat raffle, Bingo and a pub quiz. In addition, as a thank you to their customers there is 20p off all pints on Sunday and Monday. The pub is also a keen supporter of local amateur boxing, sponsoring the City of Hull Boxing Club.
