Covid 19 - CAMRA Response - Local beer deliveries

4th January 2021 - National Lockdown ver 3

A new lockdown was announced yesterday and there is currently uncertainty on whether pubs and clubs can continue to sell alcohol for takeaway in sealed containers – just as supermarkets and off- licences can.

From the information that has been published so far, it looks like the Government will prevent pubs and clubs from operating as off-licences, despite changing licensing laws last year to allow all venues with a premises licences to make off-sales if they couldn’t already. This was a vital lifeline for many pubs and clubs, and also to brewers who didn’t already operate brewery shops but did have a taproom.

During the last lockdown, we know that a small number of venues allowed customers to order click and collect alcohol in non-sealable containers, which some people drank in public in groups. CAMRA agrees that this lockdown is necessary and that every effort should be made to discourage people from gathering and mixing with those outside of their household or support bubble – but this shouldn’t prevent pubs from operating as off-licences and selling alcohol in sealed containers – just as supermarkets and off licences do.

Our latest press release about this can be found here. We have also written to Alok Sharma, Secretary of State for BEIS, the Department responsible for this change. The letter is on social media and can be found in full at the end of the press release.

A revised e-lobby, calling for the Government to allow pubs to continue to sell alcohol in sealed containers and act as off-licenses has also been launched today

3rd November 2020 - CAMRA welcomes the decision to allow beer and cider takeaway sales during lockdown

Commenting on the publication of lockdown regulations which state that alcohol can be sold as takeaway or delivery if it is pre-ordered by phone or online, CAMRA’s National Chairman Nik Antona said: “I am delighted that the Government has listened to the concerns of thousands of CAMRA members, concerned pub-goers, and beer lovers who have e-mailed their MPs in the last 48 hours urging the Government to allow pubs and breweries to sell alcohol as takeaway during the second lockdown
“This is a vital lifeline for local pubs and breweries across England over the coming four weeks, giving them a lifeline of income and allowing people to support local businesses. “CAMRA continues to call on the Government to bring in a comprehensive, long-term financial support package to support all pubs and breweries through the lockdown and the tough months that will follow this winter. Without a sector-specific support package, we risk seeing thousands of pubs and breweries closing their doors for good.”

How to support our breweries and pubs during COVID-19 crisis

1. Buy beer direct from the brewery – a number of local breweries are delivering to York and surrounds, or offering opening times where you can collect your order. Buying from the brewery puts the money direct into their tills and will help them keep the lights on.

2. Buy beer and food from the pub – a few pubs are keeping their kitchens open and delivering to their local area. If your local pubs is one of them then please support them and help them survive this unprecedented situation

We’ve listed all the local breweries and pubs below. If you know any we’ve missed then please let us know on ku.gro.armac.lluh@ofni so we can update this page.
